About Zapato Lounge

The building that Northampton’s Zapato Lounge calls home has an intriguing heritage: originally built in 1595 on Market Square, it is believed to be one of the few buildings to escape the Great Fire of 1675. It has a Welsh motto on the façade, dedicated to the Welshmen who drove cattle to Northampton fairs, and is perhaps the oldest building belonging to the late Elizabethan era.

Zapato, meaning ‘shoe’ in Español, takes its name from the county’s world-renowned shoemaking industry. In fact, Northampton has almost 900 years of experience making boots and shoes, and today it counts Her Majesty, Darth Vader and James Bond as customers.

Step inside Zapato Lounge to appreciate the exposed ceilings, rich mahogany staircase and eccentric series of Victorian lampshades. Alongside our upcycled and reclaimed furniture, you will also find an entire area dedicated to family portraits and a large wall of oversized shoe illustrations.

The Lounge seats 173 guests inside, and 34 guests in the outside area that overlooks the main shopping centre – perfect for people watching. With carnivore, pescetarian, vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free menus available, our local community hub is here to be enjoyed by everyone: families, friends, couples, kids and even canine guests can expect a warm welcome.
